Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter

Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter

USA | 2021 | 97 min | Rebecca Halpern

April 22 - 23, 2022

Culinary bad-boy/superstar Charlie Trotter had it all: an eponymous restaurant, worshipful global respect for his revolutionary innovations, books, film cameos, fame, wealth; hyper-driven self-destruction was probably inevitable.

Director Rebecca Halpern scheduled to attend.

“The definitive look at the man’s life and times.” – Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun Times)

In the 2000s, chef Charlie Trotter was on top. His eponymous Chicago restaurant was one of the world’s top fine-dining destinations and he was the inspiration for a new generation of chefs. A gastronomic revolutionary and a culinary bad boy, Trotter paved the way for the likes of Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay, yet his tempestuous, competitive nature alienated many. Trotter’s unrelenting passion and pursuit of perfection at any cost led to familial rifts, business casualties, and sadly a fatal stroke at the too-young age of 54. Trotter was a complex man who could be a hopeless romantic and who mentored many young talented chefs who went on to surpass him, a wonderful friend and father—and simultaneously mercurial, hot-tempered, and dismissive of anyone he felt couldn’t meet his impossibly high standards. Using never-before-seen archival material and new interviews with those who both loved and loathed him, director Rebecca Halpern’s absorbing and in-depth chronicle of the rise and fall of Charlie Trotter stands as both a celebration of an incredibly creative chef and a cautionary tale for those who follow in his footsteps.
