Love, Gilda

Love, Gilda

USA | 2018 | 84 minutes | Lisa D’Apolito

The inner life and lasting impact of beloved comedienne Gilda Radner is given a touching tribute through revealing newly discovered audiotapes, rare home movies, interviews with friends Lorne Michaels, Martin Short, and Laraine Newman, and her own diaries as read by admirers Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Bill Hader.

Comedy may provide a light against dark clouds, a shield before the blades of bullying and mockery, or the raft that keeps one afloat amidst their inner demons. Love, Gilda highlights the story of comedic legend Gilda Radner and the many roles comedy played in her life beyond her career and fame. A synthesis of interviews, home videos, journal entries, personal recordings, and performance clips carve a window into Gilda's world. Former "SNL" castmates Laraine Newman and Chevy Chase, along with Amy Phoeler and Bill Hader, contribute to the film with their unique insights into Gilda and her work. This documentary follows a child struggling with body image before eating disorders entered the public lexicon, a force of hilarity becoming a household name in the late '70s on "Saturday Night Live," and a subsequent battle with ovarian cancer. These dovetailing narratives comprise her personal battles and triumphs with an inspiring undertone. Shots of her handwriting intersperse the film, painting her thoughts at major points in her life and reveal a tender yet indomitable character. Gilda's story is wonderfully absurd, yet relatable to the human in all of us.
