Russia | 2017 | 83 minutes | Ksenia Zueva

The harsh realities of working class life in rural Russia encompass this emotionally realistic family drama, where it's no easier to be a teenager than it is to be elderly, as one clan of five just tries to survive and keep each other close.

Being a teenager is not easy in small-town Russia. On the other end of the age spectrum, being old in rural Russia is no bed of roses either. This emotionally realistic drama reflects a hard but accurate look at a lower middle-class family of five—mother, father, son, daughter, and grandmother—living on the outskirts of Moscow. Set in the winter amongst patches of snow and naked trees in a Soviet-type apartment, they are trapped in their own strong personalities and fight to be independent yet remain deeply and bitterly tied together. However, the teenage angst presented in Nearest and Dearest is most likely the same anywhere in the globe, as youngsters search for their way to fit into their home and school worlds. In addition, parents anywhere in the world perhaps struggle to support and understand their kids. What brings this family together in a softer way is what happens with their grandma, a tragedy that will take them through a belated catharsis. This debut feature from Ksenia Zueva is produced in collaboration with Katerina Mikhailova's VEGA Film Company.
