One of These Days
Over a 24-hour period in the troubled yet electric city of Beirut, a trio of energetic twenty-somethings spend their lives as most young people do-staving off boredom, grooving to music, and searching for love-all amidst a rumbling backdrop of civil unrest.
"Tabet's film immediately engages and pulls the audience in by doing the most unexpected thing: showing the truth." Alan Mehanna - Annahar
Beirut is experiencing yet another terrorist attack with street demonstrations and police checkpoints. But for this generation that has known war since birth, it's sadly just another day. Against this backdrop of civil unrest, terrorism, war, and weapons, Maya, Yasmina, and Rami, all between 17 and 22 years old, are just trying to live their lives, navigating a minefield of heartbreak, confusion, drugs, music, boredom, love, and fear. Yasmina is a young woman who has just escaped from a stint in rehab for heroin addiction and is trying to find her way back to a more innocent time. In this quest, she hangs out with her young friend Maya, returning to the band she sang in and to her former boyfriend Rami, the band's leader. What is most striking is the evident contrast between their youthful longing for life and the omnipresence of death around them. Functioning as a metaphor for the country and its inhabitants, the film follows the trio and their friends and lovers over one 24-hour period in the beautiful, traumatized, electric city they call home.
Nadim Tabet's fervent passion for film as a child has endured in his adulthood. In 2009, he became a founding member of the Lebanese Film Festival after releasing a slew of shorts. One of These Days is Tabet's first feature which captures his keen eye for realism and portraying the authentic experience of young people.
