The best science fiction stories inspire the imagination to fill out an incredible universe, and Prospect succeeds with memorable characters inhabiting a believable lush green moon (an unrecognizable Olympic National Park) with a toxic golden-hued atmosphere. Cee (newcomer Sophie Thatcher) and her father Damon (Jay Duplass, Outside In) are on a risk-filled mission to mine a unique mineral inside an organic sac called Aurelacs. Once their secondhand spaceship lands, it becomes apparent they are going to need another way off the planet. Damon has heard of a cluster of Aurelacs known as the "Queen's Lair," but with other prospectors around it won't be easy to quietly mine it and buy their way back into space. To make matters worse, the two get into an altercation with a pair of brothers, forcing Cee to reluctantly ally with Ezra (Pedro Pascal, "Game of Thrones"), a bottom feeder who can never quite be trusted. Directors Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell have fused this low-budget sci-fi with a western lens that deepens the desperation of their characters within a world void of rules. Both Duplass and Pascal are strong as father figures, but it's Thatcher who ably reveals herself as the strongest character in the film as she struggles to stay alive and figure out a way back to her orbiting ship.
