"Dominated by classic jazz, funk, and Latin cuts, the woozily shot doc's score is intoxicating on its own." Ken Eisner - Straight
This explorative documentary follows the world-renowned Bavarian bartender Charles Schumann as he takes audiences to some most prestigious bars on Earth, from New York to Havana and Tokyo. The prescribed liquors from around the world are on full display as we learn about their varied recopies. Known as a cocktail savant, Schumann is a legend to most who call bartending their profession. He's perhaps best known for his best selling book "American Bar: The Artistry of Mixing Drinks" that remains a key influence on modern bar culture. Some of his protegees recount the exacting demands of their teacher: Either do it properly or don't do it at all. Discussions with cocktail historians reveal how the industrial revolution and convergence of populations led to the rise of the cocktail and cocktail culture with its various roots and appeals over time. While in Cuba, Schumann discusses Ernest Hemingway's love of sugarless daiquiris; in Tokyo, he highlights the city's Bar High Five and its Ginza style. There's much to learn and love in this film for all the drink enthusiasts out there, especially if you're looking to spiff up your bar game. Just make sure to watch responsibly.
