The Long Dumb Road
Hannah Fidell's delightful odd-couple comedy follows a college photography student (Tony Revolori of The Grand Budapest Hotel) on a road trip through the American Southwest who accidentally befriends a profane, alcoholic, and strangely loveable mechanic (comedic powerhouse Jason Mantzoukas).
Nathan (Tony Revolori, The Grand Budadpest Hotel) is a freshman photography student from L.A. on the hunt for the "real" America. You know, the black-and-white shots of old movie theaters, rundown storefronts, and grazing cattle. Not that he'd ever pull over to a hole-in-the-wall joint for some "real" American chow, just as long as his photos give off the right impression. But when his van breaks down in the metropolis of eight thousand people that is Fort Stockton, Texas, he's stuck in the real America. That's when a drifting alcoholic mechanic, played with unrelenting humor by Jason Mantzoukas ("The League," Sleeping With Other People) offers to help in exchange for companionship on the road. Soon, the pair are off on a disastrously hilarious road trip through the American Southwest. It's pure buddy comedy delight as they face varying encounters with a pair of hard-partying sisters, a slicker-than-oil con man, and a bear-fighting park ranger. Eventually, the normcore yuppie and roving deadbeat find there's more to each other than meets the eye as an obvious class division underlies their budding bromance. After all, the road is long, but easier traveled when the company is good.
