The Staffroom

April 14 - 24, 2022

An idealistic new guidance counselor runs up against mind-game-playing colleagues, and the emotional snakepit that is Zagreb academia, in this taut drama that allegorizes the conflicts between old and new in contemporary Croatia.

The Staffroom is an amusing and absorbing view of a grade school in Croatia that acts as a microcosm of a community. It is a buzzing hive of people and activity, and the camera constantly circles the crowded spaces yet stays tight on the subjects: strong, sometimes funny, sometimes stubborn characters. The main protagonist is Annemarie, the first-time school therapist who enjoys collaborating and doesn’t much care for hierarchy. It seems to her that if the old ways of doing things don’t make sense, try something new. Red is her favorite color as it is for her school and other environs, as every scene in the film has its own warm tones of red. The main stage is the school itself—its confines and inhabitants—where sometimes problems lie less with the students than with the adults. Yes, it seems that no one is free of personal conflicts, priorities, and problems, which make the rewarding art of collaboration so challenging.
