His family's home destroyed by a devastating earthquake, Palden sees no future in his native land of Nepal. As he says his goodbyes to his estranged loved ones before departing the country, the aloof young man begins to understand the true significance of home.

What does home matter if it's so fragile, broken so easily? Palden, a distant and unavailable young man living in Nepal, struggles with this question after his family's home was leveled in a devastating earthquake. Living with his mother in a shoddily built shack and the rest of his family scattered to the winds and estranged, Palden is unable to construct a future in his mother country. Hoping to rediscover purpose pursuing opportunity in the Middle East, he resolves to spend his last days in Nepal saying his goodbyes to his relatives. As he reconnects with his sister, joins his mother on a pilgrimage to the holy lakes at Paanch Pokhari, and completes his grandfather's funeral rites, he begins to realize that home has a deeper significance than he had ever considered in his emotional aloofness. He gains similarly epiphanic insight about the women in his life as he rekindles intimate ties with a girl he had once spurned. His family's story plays out against a breathtaking backdrop where wind-sheared peaks suddenly give way to mossy, foggy vales, and the sweeping cinematography captures its staggering beauty while also showing remnants of the tragic destruction the earthquake brought. As Palden realizes his troubles lie not in these surroundings but in his fears, The Story of '72 depicts home as where we make it.
