Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist
Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood's subversive looks helped ignite the punk rock movement and have continued to redefine British fashion for the past 40 years. Still sassy at 76, Westwood reveals her passions, inspirations, and fierce determination to retain the integrity of her brand and her legacy.
For nearly half a century, Dame Vivienne Westwood has been redefining British fashion, responsible for many of the distinct looks of our time. She was a revelation to the early punk movement for designing clothing for the SEX boutique, founded by Sex Pistols manager and her ex-partner Malcolm McLaren in 1974. She's since been a force for change and innovation in an industry made up primarily of male designers and executives. Lorna Tucker's feature-length documentary debut guides audiences along the unique path of Vivienne's life, from her early childhood in post-war England to the major runways of Milan and Paris, through a natural mixture of archival footage, ethereally crafted reconstruction, and interviews with her extensive network of creative collaborators. Originally planned as a six-month filming project, Tucker became embedded with her subject for over two years as the story unfolded more than she could've imagined. The film provides unparalleled access to Vivienne's modern battle of maintaining the ethical and sustainable ethos of her brand against the forces of profit-driven capitalism. Tucker has truly accomplished a bona fide ode to a cultural icon, now devoted to environmental activism and the betterment of our world.
Originally from Hertfordshire, Southern England, Lorna Tucker began modeling at 17. Shot by photographers that included Steven Klein and Rankin, Tucker eventually starred in a Levi's Jeans campaign. In her 20s, Tucker's focus shifted to filmmaking where she made tour videos and music promos for bands such as Unkle and Lupe Fiasco. Her debut feature, Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist , premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
