Mamoru Hosoda exhibits his mastery of understated drama and the subtleties of emotion in this beautifully animated film. Hana's decisions while raising her part-wolf children won't leave you shocked, but they will leave you aching with sweet melancholia at her selfless decisions. Hosoda's meticulous animation is a lovely change from television anime, and he uses the medium to bring the supernatural elements of the story to life in a way that wouldn't be possible with a live-action film. Most importantly, however, is the extraordinary (and extraordinarily well written) character Hana, who navigates the burdens of motherhood with fragile grace. She sets a shining example of adoring and supporting her two very different children as their secrets set them each down very different paths. Wolf Children received the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, also from Hosoda, did in 2007.
