Prolific German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon’s work comes to life in this stunning and affecting animated biography about the famed painter who fled from Berlin to the south of France, only to fall at the hands of the Nazis. It’s 1933, and 16-year-old Charlotte (voiced by Keira Knightley, Pride & Prejudice) is living with her surgeon father (Eddie Marsan, Happy-Go-Lucky) and opera-singer stepmother (the late Helen McCrory, “Peaky Blinders”) in relative happiness and prosperity, though Charlotte has always had a morbid mind and a streak of self-destruction, both inherited from her birth mother. Her paranoia doesn’t seem so out of place: Hitler and the Third Reich are rising to power, and not even Charlotte’s matriculation at an esteemed art academy is free from anti-Semitism. With nowhere else to turn, Charlotte is sent to France to live with her grandparents (Oscar® winner Jim Broadbent and Oscar® nominee Brenda Blethyn), where she falls for groundskeeper and refugee Alexander (Sam Claflin, The Nightingale). But the walls are closing in. Also featuring the voices of Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), Henry Czerny (“Sharp Objects”), and Oscar® nominee Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda), Charlotte is a superbly designed but gutting biopic about a landmark artist who left this world at a tragically young age.
