An imaginative young woman living alone in Paris, Amélie has made a vow to do good deeds and enhance the lives of her friends and neighbors: writing love letters from dead husbands to their lonely widows, publishing the work of timid writers, mending (and sometimes ending) relationships. Then she unexpectedly encounters a kindred spirit in quirky photo collector Nino Quincampoix, and realizes that the one life she has yet to improve is her own.
Full of warmth and humor, Amélie declares the importance of living our lives well and letting our idiosyncrasies connect us to each other. Jeunet’s film is both brilliant and innocent, breezy and darkly humorous, but most of all, it is strikingly original.
