Oscar-nominated documentarian Hubert Sauper (Darwin's Nightmare) takes a dizzying, science fiction-like journey into the heart of Africa for “a surreal, moving, infuriating, and persuasive argument that in South Sudan, there’s nothing post about colonialism.” – Manohla Dargis, New York Times

In Sudan, Africa’s biggest country, the old “civilizing” ideology of colonialism has re-emerged along with new episodes of bloody (and holy) wars over land and resources. Director Hubert Sauper takes us on a voyage in his tiny, self-made aircraft to the most improbable locations, and introduces the variety of influences on the country: Chinese oil workers, UN peacekeepers, Sudanese warlords, and American evangelists. Through surprising vignettes and images, We Come as Friends dives into the thoughts and dreams of those in Sudan, painting a portrait that is both stunning and heartbreaking.
