Otto Preminger’s epic production about the birth of Israel after World War II was based on the best-selling novel by Leon Uris and filmed on location. Unhappy with the novelist’s screenplay, Preminger sought out Dalton Trumbo to craft a new script, leading to the writer’s first assignment under his own name since the beginning of blacklist (though Spartacus gained the distinction of being the first released two months earlier).
