This previously unreleased gem from Studio Ghibli, a touching story of remembrance and growing up from animator Isao Takahata, comes to US screens for the first time. Presented in original Japanese and English language versions (see individual showtimes for details).

Studio Ghibli director Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies) and producer Hayao Miyazaki present the emotional journey of a young woman remembering the incidents of her childhood, a double period piece that beautifully evokes both the 1960s and 1980s. The story follows Takeo, a bored 20-something who takes a trip to the countryside which dredges up forgotten childhood memories that unfold in flashback to younger years—including the first immature stirrings of romance, the onset of puberty, and the frustrations of math and boys.

Only Yesterday was the number-one film in Japan in 1991, but has never been widely released in the U.S. before now. It remains a classic of Ghibli animation.
