July 15 - 21, 2016

SIFF Cinema Uptown | Ends Thu July 21
Inventive, eccentric, and wildly fun, documentary filmmaker Penny Lane (Our Nixon) uses animated reenactments, interviews, archival footage, and a hilariously unreliable narrator to recount the unbelievable true story of Dr. John Romulus Brinkley, a small town pharmacist who became a sensation in Depression-era America after claiming that he could cure impotence by transplanting goat testicles into men.

What starts as a small town story of alternative medicine (or as some called it, "snake oil salesmanship") grows in unexpected ways, as Brinkley transplants tens of thousands of goat testicles; amasses an enormous fortune; is (sort of) elected Governor of Kansas; builds the world’s most powerful radio station; invents junk mail, the infomercial, the sound-truck and Border Radio; hosts some epic parties; and annoys the heck out of the establishment, until finally his audacious actions force the federal government to create regulations to stop him. How he does it, and what happens when it all comes crashing down, is the story of NUTS!
