NT Live: The Audience

United Kingdom | 2013 | 150 Minutes plus intermission | Stephen Daldry

October 9, 2013

Encore screening! Helen Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in the highly anticipated National Theatre production of The Audience, from writer Peter Morgan and director Stephen Daldry.

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met her Prime Minister for a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace. A meeting like no other in British public life, both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses. Each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional - sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. The Audience imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen, from Churchill to Cameron.

The Audience reunites writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) and Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren, and is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours).

"Helen Mirren rules! Her incisive performance again crackles with intelligence, acerbic wit and profound sensitivity." - Hollywood Reporter
"Wholly tremendous!" - Daily Telegraph
"The first surefire, unstoppable hit of the year!" - The Observer
