The Punk Singer
December 6 - 15, 2013
This blistering look at the life of riot grrrl pioneer Kathleen Hanna features decades of archival footage and interviews with musical legends to tell her story of feminism, punk music, and rebellion. Skype Q&A with director Sini Anderson December 6 & 7 at 6:30 shows.
Kathleen Hanna ruled the 90s as leader of seminal bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, spearheading a movement of feminist politics, DIY 'zines, and head-on confrontation, before ending her performing career in 2005 and learning that she had an advanced case of Lyme disease. Director Sini Anderson (co-founder and Artistic Director of Sister Spit) creates a biographical documentary of Hanna using 20 years of archival footage and in depth interviews with the musician as well as comrades Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein, and Hanna's husband (and Beastie Boy) Adam Horowitz.
As Hanna says to the camera, "I lied when I said I was done. I knew I wasn't done. Singing's my life, and I have to do it or I'm gonna go totally bananas," proving she's still the rebel girl who's the queen of our hearts.
