Muerte de un ciclista

February 14, 2014

It's a bad romance with this Valentine's Day Noir. One of Spain's true classics tells the dark tale of a well-to-do adulterous couple who accidentally run down a poor man on a bicycle and then leave him to die.

Spanish Director Juan Antonio Bardem was a true hero, bringing a new frankness (initially influenced by neorealism) and an oppositional political consciousness to Spanish cinema during the Franco era. His international breakthrough came in 1955 with this pointed portrait of class division in his home country, awarded a critics' prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Bardem was unable to accept the award in person because he'd been arrested and imprisoned (the first of many times) during the shooting of his follow-up, Calle Mayor.
