Poland | 2013 | 80 minutes | Pawel Pawlikowski

June 13 - July 9, 2014

Ends Wednesday! Acclaimed director Pawel Pawlikowski (Last Resort, My Summer of Love) presents this moving and intimate story, shot in gorgeous black and white, about a sheltered 18-year-old raised in a convent in 1960s Poland who discovers a dark family secret dating from the terrible years of the Nazi occupation.

On the eve of taking her vows, Ana shockingly learns that she is Jewish and that her real name is Ida. She reunites with her tough Aunt Wanda, a diehard socialist and ex-state prosecutor who is both amused and saddened by her naïve niece. Together they take a road trip to discover and attempt to understand their family history.

Polish born director Pawlikowski returns to his homeland for a stripped down black-and-white tribute to the European film masters, one which delicately examines the lives and fates of those who were touched by the war.

"A compact gem of perfection. A total marvel." - Dana Stevens, Slate

"Ida accomplishes so much, so surely in its 80 minutes, it's as if the director Pawel Pawlikowski had dared himself: How can I tell this fascinating story efficiently yet without rushing and abridging the narrative?" - John Anderson, Newsday

This is solemn filmmaking, devoutly restrained and unshakably purposeful. We expect its austerity to fend us off, but no; it gathers us in and forbids us to look away. - Anthony Lane, New Yorker
