Final week! Ends Thurs Aug 28 | This quirky, life-affirming, low-key comedy reunites the stars of Old Goats to tell the story of a crotchety tenant (Bob Burkholder), and his long-time landlord and friend (Britton Crosley), as they seek assistance from a couples counselor to patch their rocky bromance.
Writer-director Taylor Guterson delighted SIFF audiences three years ago with Old Goats, a coming-of-old-age comedy about three pals living on Bainbridge Island who refuse to give up on life. Old Goats broke stereotypes in its depiction of the elderly, but Guterson wasn't ready to put aside his actors just yet, and reunited two cast members. Terry (Burkholder) has rented a basement suite from Barry (Crosley) for the past two decades, but lately Terry's erratic, crotchety behavior has become too much for Barry to handle. Casting about for a solution, he turns to an underemployed couples counselor for help.
"Old Goats had its theatrical release a few weeks prior to Bob Burkholder's 90th Birthday, and I wanted to do another feature with him while we still had time. Bob's character never gives in, never surrenders, but keeps participating in life and pursuing his dreams - almost as an act of pure will. That strongly parallels Bob in real life; he was as committed to finishing this film as I was. When we completed principal photography, it was definitely a mutual triumph we took a lot of satisfaction in. Bob and his family saw an early cut of the film and really liked it. I was working on a subsequent cut when Bob passed away. I miss Bob very much and I like to think this film serves as a fitting testament to him, both as a great actor and a great man." - Taylor Guterson
