My Last Year With the Nuns
June 12, 2014
Seattle writer-director Bret Fetzer’s debut feature is the story of local monologist Matt Smith as a young teenager, exploring the nooks and crannies of the heavily Catholic Capitol Hill neighborhood in an era of racial tensions.
Local director Bret Fetzer and Seattle monologist Matt Smith transform Smith's 8th-grade year into a wild coming-of-age story in My Last Year With the Nuns. Set during 1966 in a heavily Catholic Capitol Hill, Smith's teenage universe is only about ten blocks long, and its twin centers are St. Joseph School and the Seattle Times newspaper shack. While the nuns attempt to steer him towards righteousness, Smith is more fascinated by the hijinks of the neighborhood hooligans and his friends at the paper shack. The newspaper shack sits just across the Roy Street “red line” that separates the black and white neighborhoods, providing a unique forum where kids of both races can come together. Over the course of the year, Smith's fleeting friendship with one black kid brings unexpected consequences to all three parts of his world. Fetzer intercuts Smith's narration with recreations shot where the original events took place and, in a savvy directorial choice, casts Smith in all of the roles, further immersing us in his subjective point of view. Together, they recount the exploits of these boys with a compassionate but unsparing eye to explore the foundational nature of youthful tribal bonds.
Bret Fetzer is a movie writer and director but he also writes plays and original fairy tales. His most famous plays include "Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like," produced in summer of 2007 by Seattle Children's Theatre, and numerous plays for adults. "Avalanche," a one-act play co-written with Juliet Waller Pruzan, was published in Fall 2006 edition of The Kenyon Review. Bret is the former artistic director of Annex Theatre in Seattle, WA. He also wrote the narration for the documentary film Le Petomane: Fin de Siecle Fartiste, directed by Igor Vamos. My Last Year With the Nuns is the first feature film he wrote and directed.
