For the past eighty-four years musicians who ply their trade in the well-worn sounds of old-timey and bluegrass musics have gathered in Galax, Virginia for the Old Fiddler's Convention, a competitive gathering where the best players in the world display their chops for glory and bragging rights.

Perhaps what's most astounding about the Convention is the lack of film documentation of the event. Director Julie Simone is the first filmmaker given permission to capture the sights and sounds of this Appalachian tradition for the screen. Simone's camera presents the Old Fiddler's Convention as a multi-generational meeting ground where the young have learned from the older, more seasoned players, and threaten to outpace them with their fiery, passionate takes on song forms of yore. Fiddlin' is a celebration of both song and culture, and an essential contribution to the music documentary canon.
