Director Takashi Miike (Blade of the Immortal, Audition) places the duo in the center of a yakuza conflict, one both exacerbated further and focused upon them due to Yuri's theft of a sizable amount of drugs. As the sizable body count piles up, Leo is just trying to get Yuri to safety, while her visions of a rising terror betray that it's not just the mob that's hot on her trail. All of this adds up to perhaps the most riveting and madcap entertainment that the über-prolific Miike (director of over 100 films at this point) has delivered in some time.

"Hard-boiled and soft-hearted, peopled by characters who are fast with their fists and slow with their wits, First Love is mostly remarkable for renewing once again the apparently infinitely renewable resource that is Miike's filmmaking energy."—Jessica Kiang, Variety
