Leaving Home, Coming Home: A Portrait of Robert Frank

United Kingdom | 2019 | 86 minutes | Gerald Fox

June 14 - 16, 2019

An exceedingly close-up view of photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank (The Americans), finally available to view after being barred from release for well over a decade.

Originally produced in 2005, one can see why director Gerald Fox's (This Is Not an Exit: The Fictional World of Bret Easton Ellis) documentary portrait of Robert Frank was barred by release by none other than Frank himself, as the famed photographer found it "too intimate" to bear. Capturing Frank in his early 80s, he presents as both a fascinatingly cagey subject, openly questioning Fox on his filmmaking choices, and as someone whose personal tragedies and the passage of time have left him shockingly open about the circumstances of his past and present. As Deborah Young writes for Variety, "this underlying tension—which seems to be part of Frank's complex character—gives the pic some need backbone."
