Crossing
August 9 - 22, 2024
A beautiful story of love and self-discovery from the director of Cannes favorite And Then We Danced (2019), in which a retired Georgian history teacher travels to Istanbul in search of her missing niece who was kicked out of her house for being trans.
"... An incredibly powerful moment that feels like a queer shout of rage. It’s a shout that needs to be heard, from a film that needs to be seen."—Film Ireland Magazine
Lia, a retired teacher, has made a promise to find out what happened to her long-lost niece, Tekla. When Lia learns from a neighbor, Achi, that Tekla might have left their Georgian homeland to live in Turkey, Lia and Achi set off together to find her. Arriving in Istanbul, they discover a beautiful city full of connections and possibilities. But searching for someone who never intended to be found is harder than they expected—until they meet Evrim, a lawyer fighting for trans rights. As Lia and Achi weave their way through the city’s backstreets, Tekla starts to feel closer than ever.
