The Visitor From the Future is a smart and zany time travel comedy about evading ecological disaster. Alice (Enya Baroux) is a teenage environmental activist protesting the construction of a power plant helmed by her nuclear industrialist father, Gilbert (Arnaud Ducret). When a time traveler named Fox (Florent Dorin) pays Alice a visit, he confirms that the power plant will lead to mass destruction on Earth. Fox takes both Alice and Gilbert 500 years into the future where their adventures begin. Alice, Gilbert, and the time traveler form a unit, picking up friends along the way. This band of misfits is chased from era to era by the Time Brigade, a time travel police force, and also face hoards of ravenous zombies. Director François Descragues masterfully directs a talented cast amidst set pieces reminiscent of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Escape From New York, and Total Recall. With a wink to these classics, The Visitor From the Future evades being cliché. Radioactive ecological disaster is evident in the luminescent, green-and-yellow-tinged world of the future, and questions of "what would happen if…." are explored. Amidst this post-apocalyptic backdrop, the relationship between Alice and her father Gilbert evolves with complexity and heart.
