The idyllic, North Carolina waterfront property known locally as Silver Dollar Road has passed down through the Reels family for generations, providing them a welcome refuge from the oppression they experience in the surrounding white communities. But tides turn in the 1970s when unknown developers suddenly surface with deeds of sale for the Reels’ property, seeking to drive them from their land and profit from their real estate. Determined to safeguard their land and way of life, the Reels’ take their fight to the courts, but as their day in court turns into years, they find their property besieged by surveyors and police, and two of the family wrongfully imprisoned for refusing to give up their homes. Raoul Peck’s camera follows the Reels' battle to save their land, capturing both the family’s generations-deep history with the area, and the blatant and subtle the ways that power is wielded against them to create an impressive, modern-day saga of the continuing fragility of Black land ownership in the US.
