Making Music Videos (Session 2) - Virtual Filmmaking Camp

Storytellers ages 10-15 will creatively represent a song or poem in a short video using their home equipment and creatively collaborating with peers over Zoom.

July 27 - 31, 2020

Virtual Filmmaking Camps

Students will work to visually represent a song or poem of their choosing, considering what images parallel the visuals while other images may deepen the interpretation. Create a blueprint, workshop your creative ideas, and learn to use accessible apps with your Zoom teammates under the guidance of a master film educator. During the week, students will experience filming and editing their own music videos leading up to a final livestream presentation of student work at the end of the week.

  • Computer / tablet / smart phone with video editing software
  • Recordings must be transferable to editing platform if they are different devices

With daily 45-minute Zoom meetings, led by a film educator, students will interact in groups of five students as they workshop music video techniques and provide positive/constructive feedback. At the conclusion of each morning meeting, students will have an assignment that they should be able to complete independently or may need simple parental support (especially to act or to hold the camera to film). The daily student assignment and additional support materials will be emailed to parents at the conclusion of the meeting.

Daily Office Hours: While students should be able to complete the daily assignments independently, a SIFF educator will be available from 2pm - 4pm daily for an open Office Hour on Zoom to answer any student assignment questions.

Final Screening: The short videos that students create during the week will be screened as a group on a livestream event on Friday night at 6:30pm.

Instructional Levels: These Virtual Camps are curricularly designed for Beginning and Intermediate students. The levels will allow students of similar experience levels to work together and insure that the assignments given are within their capability to complete. The Beginning/Intermediate delineation is especially related to Editing experience. Students with little or no editing experience should be Beginners while students who have previous experience with editing should be good with Intermediate.

Each morning will have a 9:00am or 10:30am group meeting. Once you have registered our administrative staff will work on which time would be best for your student. If both times would be available, that would be best for scheduling.

Students may register with four additional friends to participate in one Zoom group together. Please let us know after registration if you have specific students with whom to be grouped.

This Making Music Videos camp will be presented twice this summer (the first week is July 6). The curriculum will not be substantially different for each, but students who enjoy this experience will have the opportunity to work with a different group of students and create another music video.

We will need to have a minimum number of campers to present this camp. If we have not met that number by June 22, we may need to cancel the camp week.
