“People have a tendency to move on,” Addario says. “It’s my job to get people to continue paying attention.” Love+War embeds us with the Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist as she risks her life for that mission, while also tracing her past two decades covering conflicts in countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone, and Libya—where she was kidnapped by Muammar Gaddafi’s troops. In a field long dominated by adrenaline-chasing men whose paths frequently lead them to personal destruction, Addario seeks to forge a different path, balancing these dangerous assignments with her domestic life, raising two young sons in London with her journalist husband. Long driven to understand what motivates people driven to extremes, filmmakers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (Free Solo, SIFF 2018) delve into those complexities and contradictions, presenting a stirring portrait of resilience, complexity, and an exceptional woman’s faith that one image can still change the world.
