After learning his long time estranged brother has suffered a stroke, Alvin Straight, a stubborn man stuck in his ways, makes up his mind to visit his ailing brother in Mount Zion, Wisconsin. Unable to obtain a drivers license, he mounts his 1966 John Deere lawnmower to make the 260-mile course to make amends with his brother before it’s too late for the both of them.
