Director Olivia Wilde's kinetic chamber dramedy of a marriage on the brink is raw and revealing, but also compassionate, deeply human, and incredibly funny. From a screenplay by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, two couples (Wilde and Seth Rogen; Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton) drop into the crucible of a seemingly innocuous dinner with the neighbors, where awkward small talk unearths insecurities, codependencies, failed aspirations, and deep sexual FOMO. The closeness of the single apartment set never feels constrained, and Wilde's process—workshopping material with the cast, shooting chronologically, and inviting them to explore as they worked—gives The Invite a remarkable authenticity.
