Following his historic account of the civilian toll in Mariupol, director Mstyslav Chernov turns his lens towards Ukrainian soldiers—who they are, where they came from, and the impossible decisions they face in the trenches as they fight for every inch of their land. Despite it being extremely high risk, Chernov joins soldiers on the front line in eastern Ukraine as they inch forward through a narrow one-mile strip of heavily fortified forest in an effort to liberate the strategic village of Andriivka. Weaving together original footage, intense Ukrainian Army bodycam video, and powerful moments of reflection, Chernov returns with a stunning portrayal of life in the trenches, and by extension, the desperate struggle against Russia to free the Ukrainian nation. In this harrowing, graphic picture of total war, Chernov has created a remarkable film about what it means to fight for the freedom of one’s nation while also unflinchingly looking at the futility and horror of war itself.
