老朱（郎雄 飾）是個喪失味覺的國宴大廚，他有三位個性迥異的女兒：大女兒家珍（楊貴媚 飾）篤信基督教，自從母親過世後，身為長女的她扛起母職，將自己奉獻給家庭；老二家倩（吳倩蓮 飾）擔任航空公司高階主管，精明幹練，擁有遺傳自老爸的廚藝，卻不進自家廚房，一心只想買屋離家；小女兒家寧（王渝文 飾）則是大學生，正是情竇初開的年紀。為了每周一次的家庭聚餐，老朱精心準備滿桌豐盛菜餚，但女兒們各有心事，讓兩代衝突總是浮上檯面。直到鄰居錦榮(張艾嘉 飾)的母親梁老太太自美國回來，每個人的生活逐漸有了變化……。
本片與李安的其他兩部電影《推手》、《囍宴》，皆由演員郎雄主演，深刻描寫父親形象、並探討儒家傳統中的家庭衝突，名列為「家庭三部曲」。《飲食男女》透過李安導演的喜劇手法，在象徵團聚的「餐廳圓桌」上，細膩刻劃兩代親情問題。此片雙雙入圍金球獎和奧斯卡獎最佳外語片，也是坎城影展「導演雙週」中，首部成為開幕片的华语電影。
Chu is a master chef who has lost his sense of taste.
