Mary accidentally discovers a Mermaid drawn on the wall of her small apartment in Warsaw. It turns out it was drawn by Pablo Picasso during his visit in 1948! The woman is delighted, but she has no idea that the Mermaid is about to turn her life upside down. Next door lives Radomski, an elderly man and retired journalist who remembers Picasso's visit. He is not at all pleased by the discovery of the Mermaid. Things from the past come back to him, mostly things he had already managed to forget. His thoughts return to Picasso's visit, as well as to the fate of the neighbors who, in exchange for the apartment they were given, had to show the Mermaid to anyone interested.
