What happens after Groundhog Day ends? What happens when the protagonist has to contend with life post-time loop, in all of its messy permanence? Again Again, the debut feature from Aberdeen-raised filmmaker Mia Moore, puts a singularly queer spin on that very question. Moore herself stars as Aggie, a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking trans woman who awakens from a ten-year time loop into a new day. But a decade, it seems, wasn't nearly enough time for Aggie to sort out her on-again-off-again relationship with her childhood best friend, Tess (Aria Taylor).
Executive produced by pioneering filmmaker Lilly Wachowski, Again Again is heady yet intimate, asking existential questions while staying tightly focused on a trans woman's subjectivity. Over the course of a single day, which Aggie promises Tess will be "one normal day with none of that time garbage," the two friends bum around Aberdeen, revisiting their shared past and negotiating their uncertain future. Again Again is steeped in gloomy Aberdeen atmosphere, from the gritty shipyards to the demolition derby. Yet Aggie remains haunted by what she witnessed in "the loop." When she starts to unravel the mystery of what—and who—caused the time loop in the first place, Aggie must choose the future once and for all.
