Amrum is not only the latest film from Fatih Akin; it is also the last work of his mentor and co-writer Hark Bohm, a major figure of New German Cinema who died just as this film was released. For much of his career, Akin has focused on non-ethnic Germans and their experience in German society. Here, in this sea-shot, boy's-eye view of a North Sea island in the last days of World War II, we see the cruelty and suspicion with which one group of Germans—the locals of this remote isle—view another, those from the "mainland" who have evacuated from their bombed cities. Featuring a chilling performance from Laure Tonke as the narrator Nanning's mother, a committed Nazi, Akin's film employs a disarmingly poetic visual style. On a full moon at nightfall, on a white sand beach, the boy finds the body of a mutilated airman, eaten by the tide. As Nanning learns more about his parents' hideous convictions and past, Amrum becomes far more than visual poetry: it is an affecting story, masterfully told.
