If you knew Barbara Hammer, you loved her. Bright, effusive, and wildly creative, she was a fearless and pioneering voice in experimental cinema for over five decades. Long before it was widely seen on screen, Hammer portrayed lesbian lives as sensual, joyful, and unapologetically alive—centering desire, intimacy, and community.
A groundbreaking feminist filmmaker, her work explored gender, sexuality, and identity in films such as Dyketactics (1974). In her trilogy Nitrate Kisses (1992), Tender Fictions (1995), and History Lessons (2000), she unearthed her own history and the hidden lives of other lesbians.
Working across 16mm and video, Hammer continually pushed the boundaries of form, turning the camera on both herself and her subjects with radical honesty and invention. Barbara Forever celebrates her enduring legacy—not only as a visionary artist, but as a mentor, activist, and beloved figure in queer culture. Through her lifelong partnership with Florrie R. Burke and her commitment to nurturing new voices, Hammer's influence continues to resonate across generations. In Barbara Forever, she continues to tell her story in her own voice and from her own archive.
