Following the massive box office success of The Exorcist, studio Warner Bros. immediately began plans for a sequel. Unfortunately, neither William Friedkin, the film's director, nor William Peter Blatty, its writer and producer, wanted anything to do with one. In response, the studio offered the project to director John Boorman, fresh off an Academy Award® nomination for Deliverance.
