Downeast Maine, located at the extreme eastern point of the state, is a narrow stretch of rugged coastline suspended between the forest and the sea. As one resident puts it, "If Bangor, Maine is the asshole of the world, then we're 200 miles up it. We're a long ways from anything." Here, boys are shaped by the brutal winters, the harvest of the ocean's bounty, and the rigid codes of their fathers. Bucks Harbor explores the inner lives of these fishermen, young and old, and the emotional complexity of growing up in a community where a man's worth is often defined by the strength of his back. And yet, even here, modern progress intervenes, questioning the prevalent belief in silent stoicism and redefining masculinity. We meet Mark, a builder of lobster traps who also performs in drag on TikTok. Mike Murphy seeks to temper his parenting skills while teaching two boys the family business. Then there's Dave, a lifelong fisherman and hunter, who has transmuted the experiences of his hardscrabble life into a gentle wisdom. Filled with a quiet and profound introspection, Bucks Harbor captures the harsh, rugged beauty that binds and nourishes an isolated community and the individuals within it.
