Coming-of-age films about teens starting a band are a time-honored tradition, ranging from Disney fare (Lemonade Mouth) to festival darling (Sing Street)—and I love them all. In this crowded field, Megan Rico and Kade Atwood's debut feature Edie Arnold is a Loser, which premiered at the SXSW Film & TV Festival, hits like the first bass drop at a house show, with a frenetic pace of gags and riot grrrl vibes for days.
Titular protagonist Edie (newcomer Adi Madden Cabrera) is a sarcastic wallflower just trying to survive high school. Her Floridian Catholic school, Our Lady of Undying Sadness, is so fire-and-brimstone (think nuns railing against "devil music") that it verges on camp. In forming her appropriately named punk band, The Nundead, Edie must navigate vicious popular girls, dueling crushes, her strict yet loving mother, and her cadre of friends-slash-bandmates. Luckily for us, Edie perseveres, and by the film's final notes, you'll be jamming along to anthems like "Cannibalize Your Lord and Savior." Edie Arnold is a siren song for the weirdos, the outcasts, and the underdogs among us.
