Fifteen understands that being a teenager can already be a horror story; it just adds a monstrous pregnancy to prove the point. Directors Jack Zagha Kababie and Yossy Zagha filter the quinceañera fantasy through body horror with gleeful conviction.
Ligia (Greta Martí) and Mayte (Macarena Oz) are outsiders with big dreams, namely a quinceañera spectacular enough to earn them the respect they've never had. When Ligia's boyfriend Joel (Andre Fajardo) is attacked by a creature lurking in the sewers, he begins transforming into something terrifying and passes his condition along to Ligia's unborn child. The pregnancy is far from normal. As Ligia becomes the unlikely center of school social life, her friendship with Mayte fractures and the quinceañera they always dreamed of becomes something far more dangerous than either girl imagined. The Zagha brothers don't hold back, building to a finale so unhinged it would make Carrie White proud.
Part body horror, part friendship eulogy, Fifteen understands that the most monstrous thing about being fifteen isn't what's growing inside you. It's the terror of losing the one person who knows you best.
