Hen
A runaway hen finds refuge in a crumbling Greek taverna and bears witness to a human-smuggling operation. Hen proves motherhood looks the same across species. If you think this is a goofy movie about a chicken, you couldn’t be more wrong.

Strange, funny, and touching, György Pálfi's Hen demands to be seen. As our heroine escapes a grim food processing factory, she scratches her way to a Greek seaside village where a big-hearted restaurateur (Yannis Kokiasmenos, The Summer with Carmen, SIFF 2024) takes her in. His run-down taverna turns out to double as a waystation for a violent people-smuggling operation. Driven entirely by instinct, she has no understanding of the events unfolding around her. That absolute innocence is exactly what makes her such a devastating witness.
Pálfi shoots the whole thing low and close, at actual bird's-eye level, toggling between knockabout comic romp and something darker: a wry, unsentimental look at men's capacity for cruelty toward not just animals but toward each other. The visual gags are excellent, and Szabolcs Szoke's folksy score and Giorgos Karvelas' dynamic camerawork work together to keep it moving toward a finale that is bleak yet oddly satisfying. In the end, the chickens literally come home to roost.
