At 17, Ainara (Blanca Soroa) stands at a crossroads—on the verge of leaving high school, possibly starting university, perhaps falling in love. Instead, she is considering a life as a cloistered nun. The decision destabilizes her family, none of whom feel strongly enough about faith to devote their lives to it. Most critical is her aunt Montse (Patricia López Arnáiz), a progressive, atheist, and deeply family-oriented figure who sees Ainara's choice as a troubling surrender of freedom. On the other side, a young priest tries to build a connection with the sensitive teenager, while Mother Isabel (Nagore Aramburu) seeks to guide her spiritually, offering a space for intimate confession and reflection. Sundays refers both to the day of Mass and to the weekly gatherings that bring families together. The film delicately explores these two parallel worlds—and the tensions between them. Director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa approaches the story with unusual seriousness, rigor, and sensitivity. Following her acclaimed debut Lullaby (SIFF 2022), she confirms her place as one of Spain's leading filmmakers. Carried by three remarkable performances—newcomer Blanca Soroa alongside Patricia López Arnáiz (Goya Best Actress) and Nagore Aramburu (Goya Best Supporting Actress)—the film offers a moving and thought-provoking exploration of the fragile balance between devoted faith and unshakable skepticism. Following its widespread acclaim from audiences, the film emerged as the standout at this year's Goya Awards, also taking home Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
