Director Glenn McQuaid's The Restoration at Grayson Manor is a campy queer horror-comedy with a Gothic heart.
Boyd Grayson (Chris Colfer) has made an art form of antagonizing his mother. A hedonistic pianist living off family wealth, he delights in parading his one-night stands through the estate, a reminder to Jacqueline (Alice Krige) that she'll never get the grandchildren she craves. When a freak accident leaves Boyd handless, Jacqueline installs experimental prosthetics wired to his subconscious, on the condition that he finally give her an heir. The hands take on a life of their own, even when detached from Boyd's body, and the body count at Grayson Manor begins to rise.
Colfer and Krige go at each other with verbal ferocity, and McQuaid and co-writer Clay McLeod Chapman's script gives them plenty of ammunition. Cinematographer Narayan van Maele shoots the manor with a richness that mirrors the relationship at the film's core while echoing James Whale's The Old Dark House.
Part Gothic nightmare, part black comedy, The Restoration at Grayson Manor is a cult classic in the making.
