In a cozy cabin in the woods positively oozing the spirit of hygge, family drama is about to explode. Twenty-seven-year-old, semi-permanent college student Louise (Freja Klint Sandberg) is excited to spend another Christmas with her mother, the high-strung Christel (Lene Maria Christensen). That is, until Louise's estranged grandmother Vivi (Birthe Neumann) shows up unexpectedly, with a mischievous grin and three bottles of wine in tow.
In her debut feature, Three of a Kind, Danish director Charlotte Brodthagen spins a tender yet spiky tale of buried secrets, tested familial bonds, and intergenerational trauma. Between heated games of trivia and Christmas traditions gone awry, the three generations of women clash, confide, and come to terms with one another. In scenes crackling with wit and lived-in chemistry, their relationships subtly morph. Dark Scandinavian humor abounds; in one indelible scene, the ever-practical Christel scrolls through fonts for her tombstone. A dramedy brimming with compassion for its flawed characters, Three of a Kind is a cathartic watch for anyone who's ever approached the holiday season with a tinge of trepidation.
