Friendship can be unexpected, intense, and a stabilizing force in one's life—just as it was for Anna Fitch, co-director alongside Banker White, when she met Yo. At 24, Anna formed an inextricable bond with 73-year-old Yo, united by their commonalities, differences, and shared interests.
After Yo's passing, Anna dedicates ten years to building a miniature detailed version of Yo's house, a space she can squeeze herself into to visit Yo in the form of a 20-inch puppet she creates. In this enchanting setting, their stories unfold, seamlessly intertwining magical fantasy with Yo's rich life moments. Born in Switzerland in 1924, Yo's life journey took her through war, defying expectations around sexuality, motherhood, aging, and her own death. Time blurs as Anna revisits memories, capturing an intergenerational friendship that transcends mortality.
Winner of the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlinale Film Festival, Yo (Love is a Rebellious Bird) uniquely embodies in this intimate vérité the spirit of an independent and fierce woman, while showcasing Anna's quest to find her own voice through knowing Yo.
