Young Stanislaw, riddled with tuberculosis, departs Switzerland to spend his final days with his introverted forester brother Boleshaw on their secluded farm. This return home reignites a sensual passion for life, music, and love, giving him a vibrant energy at odds with his mournful brother. Their conflicting emotions lead to confronting repressed guilt and reconciliation of the past. Set in the early 1930s, this intimate character study offered Wajda the opportunity to explore areas outside of his intensely political war films and contemplate nature through reworking motifs from classic Polish landscape and symbolist paintings in this elegant depiction of early twentieth century provincial life.
