But friendships, personal relationships and moral values are soon tested when they encounter ruthlessly competitive barons and competing self interests. An adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author Stanisław Reymont’s novel, the film is a compelling and continually pertinent indictment of rampant capitalism and humanity’s more selfish impulses. Wajda’s first Academy Award-nominated drama remains one of his most celebrated films.
